Data Protection Compliant Indoor Localization and Tracking of Persons (DILoTra)

European Union Rhineland-Palatinate

Project Description

The goal of the project is the development of a system for indoor localization and tracking for use in large rooms and buildings. Persons should be located and their movements should be recognized, tracked and analyzed. To achieve a certain precision of the localization, several known approaches have to be combined. Additionally, methods of artificial intelligence (especially machine learning) should be used. Aspects of IT security and privacy are in the focus of the project, while distributed data analyses should be facilitated in a secure and trustworthy manner in order to support inter-organizational data exchanges and inter-organisational processes.

The project adresses two different scenarios:

  1. Persons that should be localized have to initially install some software on their smart devices, which performs localization and tracking (i.e. active localization).
  2. In the second scenario, the tracked persons are not required to prepare themselves or their devices in any way. Bluetooth and WiFi signals of their mobile phones, smart watches or similar are used to locate and track the persons (i.e. passive localization) This approach is preferred due to the broad adaption of smart devices.
Special attention has to be payed on questions related to data protection and privacy. It has to be guaranteed, that no personal data is used or stored in a way that endangers the rights and freedom of the data subjects.
